Since June 4, 2018, learner drivers in Great Britain can take driving lessons on motorways, provided they are accompanied by an Approved Driving Instructor (ADI) in a dual-controlled car displaying L-plates. These lessons are voluntary, not part of the practical test, and strictly prohibited for learner motorcyclists.

Key Rules and Information:

  • Instructor Required: Lessons must be with a qualified ADI; you cannot practice on motorways with a parent or friend.

  • Dual Controls: The car must be fitted with dual controls.

  • Voluntary: Motorway lessons are not compulsory, but encouraged to build confidence and skills.

  • No Motorcyclists: Learner motorcyclists are still forbidden from riding on motorways.

  • Trainee Instructors: Trainee driving instructors cannot take learners on the motorway.

Why the Change?

The law was updated to allow learners to gain experience in high-speed environments, helping them understand how to drive safely on motorways before driving independently.

Safety Guidelines:

  • Learners should only enter the motorway when their instructor considers them ready.

  • Other drivers should follow the Highway Code, keeping a safe distance from learner vehicles, particularly when they are joining or changing lanes. [1, 2]

If a learner violates these rules, they can face fines and penalty points on their provisional license
